One thing I strive to do in my family sessions as a lifestyle photographer is to truly capture the emotion and story of the family I photograph. It is hard to get a sense of what a family is about when you are simply lined up in a triangle formation in a field, except perhaps that you are good at following shape-based directions #geometry :). If your kids love to wrestle, let’s see them wrestle a little bit. If you like to sit on the kitchen counter, lay on the living room floor, jump on the bed; I WANT TO SEE IT! I want to capture it. I want to document what you love about your every day. Every day you get to be alive and spend with your sweet family is pretty dang special and I want to help you remember what that looks like. What that feels like.
It is no secret this home is overflowing with love. I knew this from the moment I entered the home and it was so easy to capture. From mom and dad snuggling on the chair or bed, to sweet baby kisses, you easily get a sense for their love.
Now let’s talk about this incredible family for a minute. Ashley is my dear friend from high school. She was truly one of the sweetest, funniest, nicest girls at our school. I had the opportunity to hang out with her quite a bit and I’m honestly a better person for it. After she graduated (a year ahead of me) she moved away and travelled the globe. She has really experienced life and lived in many places around the world. Since I had seen her last, she met her awesome husband and had a sweet baby boy. It was so great catching up with her and seeing the family she has created. She also is a talented photographer and you can check out her stuff here!
Lastly, let’s talk about film. Ah…. film! I’m sure I’m sounding like a broken record but I can’t stop. Won’t stop. I understand that many of you may not be able to consciously tell a difference and maybe you don’t even care. And that’s cool. But to me the whole experience is so special. From loading the film into my camera, to slowing down my shooting process, to receiving my digital scans back in my e-mail; I still get excited every step of the way and hope it continues. Being able to slow down and make every shot count vs my digital days of rapid fire and then selecting the best single shot from 15 nearly identically images, has done wonders for me in many ways. I enjoy the conversations and connections I can have with my clients when camera isn’t all up in my face snapping away. I truly feel as though I’ve fallen in love with photography again and it is pushing me creatively. Digital has its benefits for sure but the colors and softness in film just can’t quite be matched. This is my first indoor sessions where I left my digital camera home and only brought my film. I didn’t have digital to use as a crutch or fall back on, and…. I loved it.
All images are shot on a Pentax 645n medium format film camera with Kodak Portra 400 film and developed at The FIND Lab.

These photos are absolutely stunning. They almost look like a model family with the model house. You can definitely see the love and the caring in the home. This is one of my favorite shoots you’ve ever done. Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks so much Paula! That really means a lot. I loved everything about this shoot.
