Lately I’ve been wanting more out of myself and my photography. I felt that I was able to provide good images and a great experience for my clients, but something was missing. I made work my clients were happy with and that made me happy. I’ve been in this game for a while now and if I’m being honest with myself, I feel as though I became comfortable with my work and stopped growing. I could list out a hundred great quotes about how growth comes when you are uncomfortable, but instead I’ll drop this link to this article entitled “The Only Time You Are Actually Growing is When You’re Uncomfortable” which basically sums up my thoughts on this. Again, I would never want to discredit the work I’ve done in the past because I think they were generally technically good images.

Lately however, I’ve become more inspired by telling stories, finding interesting light, capturing soulful images and yearning to worry less about shooting “technically perfect” pretty images. I don’t want my style to change, but rather evolve and inspire. I hope you can see this shift in my work as this year goes on. I am going to be shooting more film and leaving my digital set up home, stepping out of my comfort zone and worrying less about finding the nice and even (dare I say easy) light I thought I had to shoot in.

I believe beginning to shoot film was really the first catalyst for this desire for more soul in my images. It has made me slow down and try to make each shot, a shot that would end up in the “highlight” reel. Film has such an authentic feel that, to me, using this medium alone adds to the heart of the image. The latest push in this shift, was attending the Photo Native conference in Utah. I had the opportunity to listen to, and be inspired by, some incredible artists. I left empowered and ready to make the growth I desired. Now I must give a shout out to my wife, Brandi, who is my biggest supporter as I invest (and obsess over) my time, money, and energy in this little business of ours. I really am so lucky to have her by my side. Lately she loves to quote Mrs. Charity Barnum from The Greatest Showman (which she has seen 7 times I might add) “However big, however small, let me be part of it all.” Of course, I must also give a shout out to the Pyper family, who let me into their beautiful home (which will soon be featured on Design Sponge) and trusted me to experiment and create these images that capture the light and heart I’ve been aching for.
